Saving Hitty Cassidy Raikes
Some of the things I discovered when repairing the legs is that the elastic was originally held in by slivers of wood jammed into the holes. I also discovered that neither of the legs was drilled through in the same place. I followed the original holes, and one was considerably higher than the other. Consequently, after the repair, Hitty Cassidy Raikes will always have one leg slightly higher than the other.

The first thing I did was find my hand-drill and insert a very small bit. I twisted it in my fingers and drilled out the peg that held the old elastic in place.
If you have to do this, take a lot of care to make sure that it goes straight through the old hole, so that you don't drill a second hole in the leg. Don't ask me how I know this can happen. |

| I threaded a thick round elastic through the hole, and knotted the elastic on the thigh. I really didn't want to have a knot showing, but there wasn't a choice. Any other attempt to glue or otherwise fasten the elastic in place without the knot failed. |
|
| I filled the hole with Tacky Glue, and then used a shaved toothpick to 'wedge' the elastic in place. I snipped off the toothpick level with the leg once the glue was completely dry. |
|
| When the glue was completely dry, I pulled the elastic taut, and used a hemostat to hold it in place. |

| I threaded the elastic through the hole in the leg, and made a second knot on the outside thigh. I forced a toothpick in from the outer edge and glued. Once the glue was dry, I snipped off the excess elastic and toothpick. I also put a drop of glue on both of the knots on the outside of the legs. |
|
| Because she had been such a brave girl, I decided to reward her with new socks and shoes. First, I painted socks on with cream paint. |

Then she got a new pair of boots, instead of the shoes she had before.

Do I think this repair will hold? I'm not sure. The elastic
I used was much thicker, but it may not be good enough.
If this repair does not hold, I will probably redrill the holes larger, and
peg her as a traditional Hitty. Hitty Cassidy Raikes will no longer be an active
Travel Doll, and her trips out will be severely curtailed. But at least she
is able to stand on her own two legs again! While manipulating the dolly to
fix her legs, the elastic in her arm snapped, and one arm came off. I used the
same method as I used on the arm to repair. The top of the arm snapped and the
arm split, and had to be reglued before continuing. After I put in the elastic
with the dreadful knot on the outside, I used a toothpick to wedge the elastic
ion place. However, instead of snipping off the excess toothpick, I cut it to
a length of 1", and stuck it through the armhole. Because only one arm
broke off, I did not do anything to the remaining arm. I pulled the elastic
of the picked arm through, and wedged it in place in the body. I made sure to
leave enough so that if--when--the elastic in the other arm snapped , I would
be able to merely pull it through and fix the two arms together. The head elastic
did not break, but if it ever does, I intend to glue her head straight on, much
like the original Hitty.
