Disaster at the Read-A-Thon

Sometimes the best plans get messed up. The Staff at the AGA had planned a Read-A-Thon for the Campers.
It was supposed to last all night (or until 9:00 pm) and the Campers were going to read books, and have books read to them!
However.....

The Campers get comfy on the beautiful Monogrammed Blankets from Hitty Rachelle and Her Person, Anne Rollins.
Mr. Spock kicks off the Read-A-Thon by reading a few chapters from Hitty: Her First Hundred Years

The girls giggle and whisper, and listen to the story.

"I love the Old Peddler!" yelles Hitty Thankful , and everyone laughs.

"I love the crows," says Hitty Rachelle, and everyone laughs again.

Hitty Rachelle has found a purr-kitty to pet while she listens to the story.
"I really love cats!" she whispers to Hitty Ruth Ann.
"We have a lot of them at the Redwood Hittys' house," says Hitty Ruth Ann.
Hitty Faith is caught up in the story.
"I've heard it a lot of times," she says, "but I never get tired of listening to it".

"This is my favorite part!" says Hitty Ruth.

Pepito grins. "It's always fun to read about your relatives."

"Yes," says Hitty Ruth with a smile. "The Real Hitty is like a sister to me. I met her last year."

"Really? Cool!" Pepito is impressed.

"Ummmmmmm, Hitty-Kit....." says Hitty HesterB in a low voice.

"Shhhhh!" Says Hitty-Kit.

"No, I think you should look at the--ummmm--kitty on your lap."

Hitty-Kit gasps, and calls out softly "Mr. Spock? We have a problem."

"A problem?" says Mr. Spock, looking up from his reading.

"Everyone freeze!" he says in a low but carrying voice. "No one move a muscle."

The Campers are puzzled, but everyone freezes. Is it a game?

As Mr. Spock tiptoes towards Hitty-Kit, the Campers' heads swivel
until everyone knows the problem.

"Oh, dear!" whispers Mr. Giles. "Oh, err, ummm--dear!"

"Ok," says Mr. Spock. "Everyone but Hitty-Kit, Hitty HesterB, and Ruth Ann, get slowly to your feet, and very quietly tiptoe away."

Hitty Sue wants to help her sisters, but she slowly turns and creeps away, as instructed.

"Sloooooowly!" says Mr. Giles. "Come this way, Campers."

Brave Pepito scoops up two of the Mini-Hittys, and carries them to safety.
Hitty Ruth crawls away, too afraid to go fast, but making good time nonetheless.

Mr. Spock slowly approaches the terrified girls. They have not moved a muscle.
Hitty Whit hides behind the chair. "Quick, Cuz Britta, back here!"

"Now," says Mr. Spock, "I will approach and remove the skunk. Then, as soon as I give the word, you girls go straight to Xander and Mr. Giles, and they will lead you to safety."

The girls nod slowly and carefully, being very, very careful not to disturb the critter.

Mr. Spock carefully leans over and applies the Vulcan Neck Pinch to the skunk, who goes limp.

"Ooo! Don't hurt him!" calls Hitty-Kit softly.

"He, err, it--is perfectly fine," says Mr. Giles.

"Yeah," says Xander. "Don't worry about him. Mr. Spock didn't hurt him a bit."

Mr. Spock releases the skunk into the woods, safe, and unharmed.
He lets out a huge sigh of relief.
Tribbles are bad enough, he thinks, but skunks! That could have been a big disaster!

We regret this unfortunate incident, and hasten to inform all Camper Moms that no one was hurt in the slightest,
and not a single Camper, Staff, or Kitty was sprayed.
The skunk was unharmed in the taking of these pictures.
