My Favorite Pet
by Hitty Iris Raikes
My favorite pet would be a Great White Shark like the one
on "Shark Tales". This pet would be fun to have because I
would put him in all sorts of places like the swimming pool and the
boys' bathroom. Sometimes I would take my Great White Shark swimming
with me in the lake. Great White Sharks require a lot of care. They
have to keep swimming all the time to circulate water through their
gills, or they will die. They eat almost anything, but I would probably
feed my Great White Shark on boys from the AGA. (Ok, not really. I would
feed it fish.) I would scrub my Great White Shark with a long-handled
brush if he got dirty. He would never bite me, because we would be best
friends. Most people are afraid of Great White Sharks, but I would never
be afraid. I would call him Toothy.

My Favorite Pet
by Bitty Aqua
My favorite pet is a little puppy named Oscar
that was born right here at the Ash Grove Academy. Mrs. Plum said he
was the runt of the litter, and that he would need special care. I had
to feed him with a dolly bottle until he was old enough to eat out of
a bowl. He is a lot of fun because we have bonded (that's what Mrs.
Plum said) and he thinks I am his mother. We play outside when it is
nice. I am teaching him to fetch, but so far, he just takes the stick
and runs! Once he chewed my sneaker, and I had to yell at him, and I
felt bad. I think he felt bad, too. Puppies need a lot of care. I have
to make sure he has food and fresh water twice a day. I also have to
watch and make sure the other dogs don't eat his food, because they
are bigger than he is. I brush him every day with a dog brush and also
give him a bath when he needs it. Oscar is my favorite pet.

My Favorite Pet
I have a very special favorite pet. He is a red-headed conure named
Big
Bird. I love him first because he is Beautiful and second because he
is
so funny. He has a bright red head and green body. He can crow like
a
rooster. He can talk, he says pretty boy, come here, what are you doing,
give me a kiss ( and moves his beak like he is kissing you ). Mom says
to
him wanta dance and he dances and repeats wanta dance. When one of moms
sunday school kids were here (Billy was his name) and laughted Big Bird
laughted too. He is soooo smart. He loves the strawberries my family
picks from the garden. I help Mom care for Big Bird by helping her three
times a week to take his tray from the bottom of the cage and clean
all
the mess he has made outa it. Then we give him fresh water and his food.
He likes whole field corn kernels, sunflower seeds, bread, apples and
even oranges. In the summer time Big Bird has what Mom calls a jungle
sound. He lets out with a Big SQUAK that can heard six houses down.
I
love to watch him dip his head in the water to take a bath. I love Big
Bird a lot .

My Pet Goldfish
by Hitty Violet Raikes-*****
My favorite pet is my goldfish, Harry, even
though he
isn’t one that you can cuddle like a dog or a cat.
Harry is very good at listening to me. He doesn’t say
much, and is generally pretty quiet. I keep him in an
aquarium, and the noise of the water running through
the filter sometimes helps me sleep at night. I feed
him fish food, I keep several different types so that
he doesn’t get bored with just one type of food. He
doesn’t eat very much, so his food lasts a long time &
it’s important to keep the tops on so it doesn’t get
stale. I add new water every week to his aquarium,
and clean the filter. About once month I “vacuum”
the gravel to get more gunk out. I tried putting real
plants in the aquarium with Harry, but he likes to do
his own decorating and he either eats the plants or
up-roots them. Harry is a really great pet and would
be a really good pet for people who have allergies to
animal hair, since he has none. Harry is very smart
and can swim through a hoop when I put it in for him.
Goldfish make very good pets, and Harry is an
exceptionally good goldfish.

My Favorite Pet
My favorite pet is a gift from my Hitty Mom's
friend. He is a little black
and white scotty porcelain dog that once belonged to someone my Hitty
Mom loved.
It was found in that loved one's belongings just recently. The original
owner died
many years ago when just a teenager. It is a perfect Hitty size, so
Mom let me
have him. He became my favorite pet. He is a rascal sometimes. He likes
to annoy
some of the other bigger doggies...sometimes he sneaks in their baskets
and sniffs
for treat crumbs. At night, he gets to sleep with me and we snuggle.
In the morning,
he wakes me with a puppy kiss and happy for a new day!
I am so happy to have this very special pet.

My Dream Pet
By Miss Francis Raikes ********
My family already has a lot of pets a dog named
Fiona, a cockatiel named
Arthur, an alligator lizard named Mr. Peabody and a goldfish named Goldie
but they used to have more. They just lost two goldfishes and a lizard
within
one week and this makes them all very sad, especially the Kleider children.
But if I had my secret dream pet, it would be a spider monkey and I
would share him
with the whole family. If I had a spider monkey, I would name him Neville
(after
Neville Longbottom from Harry Potter) unless he was a girl and then
I would
name her Ginny. I would keep him with me all the time. He would sleep
in my bed
with me and live in my room. I would play with him every day and take
him
for walks outside. Do monkeys take walks? And I would feed him only
the foods
that would make him healthy and strong and happy. My mom says that sometimes
we have to eat foods we don’t like the best because they are good
for us. I would
make sure Neville ate those foods. I would take classes so that I could
know how
to take care of Neville best, because monkeys are special. Even though
I would
share Neville with the whole family, Neville would be my special friend.
And I promise,
if I can have a spider monkey, I will help with the dishes every night
after dinner.
The end.

My Ideal Pet
By Hitty Piper Wray
If I could have a pet, I’d like two zebra finches -- a boy and
a girl! They are
such pretty, small birds, and come in colors like tan and gray, with
black and
orange touches. I love to hear them chirp and twitter as they flutter
from perch
to perch in the pet store. They look at you with their bright little
black eyes
as if to say, "Where are your feathers, strange creature?"
I have been reading
about zebra finches and how to take care of them, so I know that they
need lots
of fresh drinking water and a place to take a bath. They also eat lots
of seeds,
like millet and canary seeds, and they like to have fresh greens in
their diet, too.
I think this would be a good way to get rid of some of the dandelions
in the front yard!
They also need extra calcium, so they would have a cuttlefish bone like
parakeets get, too.
They might make messes in their cage, but I would clean it every day
(I promise!) and make
sure they had fresh food and water. Zebra finches are natives of Australia,
but most of the
finches in the United States were bred and born here. My zebra finches
might even lay eggs
and have babies! That is why zebra finches would be my favorite pet.

Moonbeam
By Grace Raikes *******
The pet I want most is a giant Luna Moth. Her name would be Moonbeam
because
Luna means moon. She could sleep in the apple tree outside of my room
during the day,
because Luna Moths are nocturnal, which mom says means they are awake
during the night.
And at night, I could ride on her back and we’d have wonderful
adventures. Mom
says that moths are sometimes fairies in disguise. Fairies are my most
favorite creatures. My moth would be a fairy and we would fly to fairyland
and
have a midnight ball. And I would dance with the prince of the fairies
and he would fall
in love with me. But I would not eat their food, because if you eat
their food
you will be stuck in fairyland and that would make my mom sad. Sometimes
Moonbeam and I would go swimming in the moonlight and catch fireflies
to make
special fairy lanterns, but we would let them go after 10 minutes. We
would dance
and eat berries all night long and drink dandelion tea out of acorn
cups and then Moonbeam
would turn back into a moth and take me back to bed before the sun rises.
She would be my best friend and we would be together always.

Sunny Bunny
By Abigail Wilson *******
My most favorite animal in the world is a bunny. I would love to have
a bunny
as a pet because they are soft and warm and quiet. Quiet pets make the
best listeners.
If I had a pet bunny, I’d name her Sunny Bunny. I would plant
a special garden with
all of the vegetables she would love best and I would keep a fence around
it to keep it
safe from other animals. I would build a special hutch that we could
keep in the basement
and I would fill it with clean straw so it would be warm and cozy for
Sunny. I would
keep her water clean and full so that she could have a fresh drink whenever
she wanted.
I would play with her everyday and let her hop around in the back yard
for exercise.
Exercise is very important for pets; it keeps them healthy. On rainy
days, I’d let Sunny
play in my room, but I would keep all of my small toys out of reach
because she might
try to eat them and choke on them. A bunny is a good pet because they
are quiet and small
and soft and they make great companions. I would love to have a bunny
for a pet.

My Favorite Pet

My favorite pet is my teddy-bear Lumpy. To some
he may not be real, but to me,
he is my bestest friend and pet. We have terrible storms in Indiana.
I used to be
frightened of them. The wind hollering and carrying on so, scared me
something fierce.
Then Mother told a story about a lil girl who sang
to her teddy when she was afraid.
Now I sing to Lumpy whenever I need a bad moment to pass. He makes me
feel so much
better, I forget to be afraid. A tornado passed over last fall and Mother
was so proud of me.
Course she did say my singing was so loud she didn’t hear the
twister. Lumpy likes to
play dress-up. He will even play house with us girls. He’s a dandy
baby brother. We
Hittys have a small house. Lumpy fits in fine and doesn’t knock
about the furniture like
a doggy or cat might. He lets me drag him by his ear or his leg and
never complains
or yelps (I’m trying to do better about that. I just keep forgetting.).
I think Lumpy is the
prettiest of all bears. He’s the color of my favorite candy, toffee.
His head is kinda
cocked to one side like he’s listening to me. I think he does
hear me. Lumpy likes to
take bubbly-baths and sit in the sunshine to dry.
If I could have any pet in the world, I wouldn’t trade my Lumpy
bear for nuthin’

I would like to own a small lamb as a pet because
I am
from a farming community and family. I am now living in
Western Maryland an that is a rural farming area also.
It would remind me of home. I am all alone right now
and a lamb would give me company until my brother
comes here to live. I would take my lamb for walks on
a leash and it could also nibble on the grass for
extra food. Along with the grass I would feed the lamb
with it's special food. My lamb will have a small
shelter to live in. When it's old enough, I will sheer
it to have wool to spin. I will do this as a 4H
project and take it to the fair to be judged on how
well I have worked with the lamb, caring for,
handling and feeding it. After the fair my lamb will
come home to live with me and continue to be my
friend. We will continue to take walks together.

has a
real loud purr when I pet her that makes me fee x-tra special all over.
When my mom and I go to wash our face Tabitha comes right up on the
sink
and puts her paw out so she can get it washed too. I feel Tabitha dry
cat
food in the morning and moist cat food in the evening. About three times
a day she Meows and I get to give her a special treat. I always put
a
pan of water in the bathtub so she can have a drink all the time.Tabitha
loves to catch the flies in our house but she eats them----YUCK. Dad
isnt' too happy because she does not catch the mice we sometimes get.
We
have some cute little mice toys that she would rather play with, she
throws them all over the place. Tabitha loves to curl up and sleep on
a
blanket on the couch. When I come into the room she comes over and falls
at my feet so I will pet her, I love Tabitha. Best of all I love her
when
she licks me to tell me she loves me back.

My favorite pet is our bunny, Jumper. Jumper is very smart and has soft
fur.
He can do tricks like lick my face and jump in the air to receive his
favorite snack
which is a carrot. He uses a kitty litter box so he doesn't have to
be confined to a hutch,
however for his safety (so he doesn't chew electrical cords) he does
have to stay
in this garden cage but we all can fit in the cage to play with him.
Sometimes if
we promise to be careful Hitty Mom will let us take him out to play.
He loves to go
outdoors and eat grass and purple clover blossoms. He has to be fed
twice a day
with special foods made for rabbits like grain and alfalfa. He sleeps
on a bed of hay,
which we keep fresh by cleaning weekly. We clean his litter box and
make sure
he has fresh water daily. Sometimes in the summer Hitty Mom lets me
take the
garden cage outside and jumper and I sleep together under the stars.

Tex the Armadillo

I have a pet armadillo. His name is Tex because
we think he wandered up

Tex is a nine-banded armadillo. He eats insects like ants and beetles,
and
small plants. Tex has a snout like an anteater. He cannot roll up into
a ball like

Cooper is a red Beta who lives in our 10 gallon aquarium with eight
other common freshwater fish. Most Beta's live in small Beta bowls but
we thought it would be fun to see if he liked a bigger space. The day
we put him in the tank he swam up and down and all around the tank.
He happy to have so much space to swim in.
It is fun to watch Cooper play. He likes to hide behind the plants and
rocks and to play chasing games and tag with the other fish. He is very
smart too. Each day at feeding time when we turn on the light he swims
to the top to get his food and he gives us a kiss on our fingers.
Once a month we use a siphon vacuum to clean out the old uneaten food
from the bottom of the tank. The old filter is taken out and a new one
is put in and we exchange 1/4 of the old water with fresh water.
Sometimes when we go shopping our Hitty Mom lets us buy a new rock or
plant so he will have new places to play or hide. This week we gave
him a silk lily pad that floats on the top of the water.

You can find your best friend in the strangest
places.
Hello. This is my friend Squirt! One day at the beach, after fighting
off
sea gulls, I went into the surf to get my composure. Up beside me
appeared this sweet little dolphin squeaking at me and squirting me
with
water. He made me laugh and forget all about my troubles He had lost
his family and
felt very lonely and a little afraid. I invited him home with me where
he
lives in my pool. We've been best friends ever since. You
might think a dolphin would
be hard to keep or smell bad but this is
not the case with Squirt. He's very neat and tidy and he's also very
smart.
Maybe he can't fetch a ball or run out in the grass with me ( I can't
run
anyway, as you may recall) but he makes a great swimming partner (remember,
I can float) and also many evenings we just sit and talk. Oh yes! Dolphins
are
very smart and we have found a way to communicate.
While swimming Squirt can jump high out of the water and sometimes he
pulls
me along beside him. We laugh and feel so happy to be alive.
I can't think of another friend who has been so loyal to me or been
a
better listener. If you're thinking of getting a new pet, you might
consider a
dolphin. They're filled with joy and love and make a wonderful friend
indeed.

We have one dog and four cats in our house,
but Mom Elaine says they are all china antiques, and they don't like
to play very much. So my favorite pet is Scorch, the Dragon. He is only
a young dragon, so he doesn't breathe fire yet, but he can't come in
our house because Dad Jerry says he didn't build that house to have
it burned down by a dragon! Dad has a bunch of dragons, but Scorch is
more my size, and I can visit him in his bookcase. Dad has dragon books,
too, so I learned that Scorch is an England dragon, not a China one.
He is brownish-greenish-purplish, with rosy glittery wings, and his
tail is not long and snakey like a China dragon. He is furry, but will
get scales when he grows up. Because he lives in the house, he doesn't
do things Mom says are anti-social, like eat maidens and hoard gold.
I feed him puppy chow, and brush him, and play with him. I can climb
on his back, but he can't fly yet. I hope he can soon, so I can ride!

'Dog' is Hitty's best friend even if he isn't
perfect!
'Dog' has lost his back leg... But this doesn't stop him.
'Dog' is always here for us when one of us feels sad or lonely. He sits
beside us and offers his
big, brown, sad eyes and a whimper to let us know everything will be
ok. Sometimes he climbs
into our lap and gives us 'the look of love'.
'Dog' is especially here whenever we have food. Not even a lost leg
keeps him from
his appointed rounds. He thinks like us. If it's edible, it's important!
Here, Dog is guarding our
cakes for us. Look at his keen eye and his tense body. He'll guard that
cake to the bitter end!
Even though he's physically challenge he's always beside us ...Or ...under
us or ..sneaking
trying to get our cakes! It's amazing how he manages to climb onto a
chair or.....table.... We
are trying to catch him since he never does this when anyone's around.
Sometimes he hides the
cake so well, we can't find it! What a good guard dog he is.
If you are looking for a pet you might want to consider a 'dog' whose
not perfect'.
Because they are surely the most perfect of all!

My favorite pet was a little fuzzy caterpillar
that kept me company in my roombox
for a day. Last summer, while my people family were away on vacation,
I awoke
one morning to the sound of birds chirping sweetly outside the window
near my
roombox.
I stepped out of my oatmeal box cradle, placing the quilt back nice
and neat, and
went to my Muppets Kitchen to fix some pancakes for breakfast. After
cleaning
the kitchen and tidying my roombox, I decided to go exploring in the
people's
backyard.
I carefully climbed down the table leg where my roombox and kitchen
are set up
and made my way out the pet door and into the backyard. As I was smelling
some
luscious purple flowers, I felt something very soft and tickly brush
against my
leg. When I looked down, my eyes met the cutest, fuzzy caterpillar.
It was then that I came up with the idea of having a pet for the day.
After
taking "fuzzy" back to my roombox, I grabbed my walnut shell
basket and filled it
with grass, leaves and flower petals for my new pet to enjoy. My thimble
wastebasket served as his water dish.
"Fuzzy" and I spent a wonderful fun-filled day as I watched
him explore every
nook and cranny of my roombox. As evening fell, "fuzzy" climbed
onto my dress
and I carefully took him back outside to the place where we had met.
Here is a picture of "fuzzy" and me.

My most interesting pet is a tiny, baby guppy
named Speck. Speck likes to swim around
in his fish bowl and eat the yummy guppy food I offer him. He is a very
pretty fish because
if you look closely at him, on his body he has little shimmering spots
of orange, yellow,
green, lilac, and blue. On his top fin is a small splash of black, which
he likes to flash
around for attention.
Speck probably can’t wait until he is
an adult because then he would have many
more vivid colors covering his sleek body and long, flowing jewel-like
fins.
I not only adore him because of his handsome looks, I love him because
of how friendly he is.
If I walk over to his bowl he will swim close to the side I am on as
if to say “hi”. I can even
run my finger along the side of his bowl and he will swim after it.
It’s so fun to watch Speck grow up; he gets more handsome each
day. I don’t know
what I would do without Speck; it brightens my day to see him get excited
when I walk
close to his bowl. Since I am only 3 1/8 inches tall, Speck is the perfect
size pet for me.
He is my best friend and I love him.

My favorite pet is a little Yorkie dog named Buddy. He came from Oberammergau
Germany,
which is known for its woodcarvings. I found Buddy sitting on a shelf
in the back of a small store.
The poor thing was surrounded by wooden felines! He looked so distressed,
how could I not
rescue him? Buddy is a lot of fun to have as a pet! He can do all sorts
of tricks.
My favorite trick is “play dead”. He is really good at it.
The first time he performed tha
t trick I was in a panic as I thought something horrible had happened
to poor Buddy.
He is always the life of a party. Everyone will gather around to watch
him do his tricks. He keeps us thoroughly entertained. Having a dog
can be a tiresome job, but Buddy is really easy to care for.
The biggest job is making sure he is termite free. Once a week I check
for saw dust
coming from places it shouldn’t be. We’ve not had a problem
as of yet, thank goodness.
He doesn’t require any type of grooming, except maybe a dusting
every now and then,
and he rather enjoys that! I love this little dog. Buddy is my best
friend.

She is a very special guinea pig and had a Surprize for us. She loved
the

had
fun running on a wheel we had in her cage. I always made sure she had
water at all times. well now to get to the surprize/ I went down one
morning to feed her and I put my hands in the cage and the cage was
all
wet. My goodness Clover I said did you spill all of your water? I cleaned
up the water and gave her some food and put more water in her bowl which
surprizing was not empty, in fact, it was over half full. We had her
in a
very large cage, thank goodness. The next morning when I went down to
feed her I could not believe my eyes. Instead of one set of eyes looking
at me there were four sets of eyes. Clover became a Mommy and had three
babies. I now had four guinea pigs. Mom said we could not keep them
all
so me and Mom found wonderful homes for them
