Vegetable Stew--Yum!
The first meal the Campers learn to prepare is vegetable
stew, fresh from the garden.

Mrs. Plum's Vegetable Stew Recipe
Fresh vegetables are best--so use whatever
is in your garden. I really don't worry about
amounts, the following recipe is merely a guide.--Mrs. Plum
1 cup chunked carrots
4 large potatoes, cubed
1 small onion, chopped
4 tomatoes, chopped
1 squash (any variety, but yellow crookneck is our favorite), cubed
1 pound mushrooms, sliced
1 head broccoli, cut into florets
1 clove garlic (or more to taste)
1 cup sliced green beans
1/2 cup corn cut from cob
6 cups water
1 packet onion soup mix
Combine all ingredients. Bring to a boil, then
simmer over low heat until all vegetables are cooked.
Let it get cold. Reheat to serve, garnish with parsley or chopped chives.
Serve with fresh bread.

Hitty Kathleen has carried in a basket of fresh turnips.

"These carrots are delicious," says Hitty Elizabeth. "I
ate two in the garden."
Hitty Ruth reaches for one to try.

Everyone bustles around, getting things washed and chopped.

"I can cut up the carrots," says Hitty Treasure.

"Why are there tomatoes in this drawer?" asks Hitty Rachelle.

"Look at these great cucumbers!" says Hitty Annie Sarah.
"Picked fresh!"

Granny Sadie puts on a kettle for tea.

"Do we need the salt or the pepper?" asks Hitty Susanna.

"Where is the ice?" asks Hitty Prairie Flower. "I need
a glass of water."

"Good job!" says Uncle Olaf with encouragement.

"I have more cukes," says bitty March.

Soon, the stews are ready to test.

"I hope I did ok!" says Hitty Kirsten.
